The Liberal Democrats have recorded their best ever European Parliamentary election result.

In our East Midlands area, the Liberal Demorats came second for the first time, more than tripling their vote with 203,989 people voting to elect Bill Newton Dunn as our Member of the European parliament (MEP) - a GAIN.

In the Harborough, Oadby and Wigston Council areas* the Liberal Democrats polled more votes than the Conservatives and Labour put together.

The clear campaign to stop Brexit saw huge increases in the Liberal Democrat vote not just in the East Midlands but across the country, GAINING 15 seats with voters returning 16 MEPs on 20.3% of the vote, the best ever performance by the Liberal Democrats or their predecessor parties. This follow the party's best ever local election results at the start of May.

The Liberal Democrat performance looks even better when compared to the other main parties, outpolling both Labour and the Conservatives by large margins. This has never happened before.

Responding to the result Liberal Democrat leader Vince Cable said:

"Our clear, honest, unambiguous message has won us our best ever European election result. We have shown ourselves to be the strongest Remain force in British politics.

We will always stand up for the people who have put their faith in us. We will take this mandate forward to campaign harder than ever to stop Brexit. There is a clear lesson for Labour in tonight's results: get off the fence. In trying to please everybody they have pleased nobody.

The Tory leadership contest increases the risk of a "No Deal" Brexit. Britain can no longer tolerate an Opposition which ducks and dives on the biggest issue of the day.

If you want to see an outward looking Britain. A Britain that stands tall in the world with our European partners. A Britain that offers opportunity to everyone at home. There is no better moment to shape the future of our party and our politics, by joining the Liberal Democrats."
